Congratulations to Butch Tudisco and Sam Guarino!  Grumps received a special award from the Jefferson County Department of Health.  Dr. Michael Fleenor, Health Officer, says "We wanted to recognize the restaurants that do an excellent job of providing a healthy environment for their customers and their staff.  At the health department we concluded a "healthy" restaurant had four key components: safe food preparation, well trained staff, foods that not only taste good, but that are good for you, and a smoke free policy."

Press Releases from Jefferson County Department of Health

Second Annual Health Officers Award of Excellence
Thursday, April 06, 2006

Jefferson County Department of Health is proud to announce the recipients of the second annual Health Officer’s Award of Excellence.  This award goes to the restaurants within Jefferson County that have promoted community health through food safety, well trained staff, healthy menu choices, and a smoke free environment.

The 2006 Health Officer’s Award of Excellence recipients are (alphabetically) Baker's Famous Pizza, Bluff Park Elementary School Cafeteria, Grump's Great Grill, Habaneros Mexican Grill Hoover, Porky's Pride Bar-B-Q Smokehouse,Subway Civic Center, Subway columbiana Road, The Pita Cafe, and Tortugas Homemade Pizza Highway 150. Each of the restaurants has an average score of  98 or higher on its last three restaurant inspections, serves a variety of foods including healthy menu items, and maintains a smoke free dining and working environment.  Special recognition is given this year to the Bluff Park Elementary School Cafeteria (Hoover City Schools) for a perfect score of 100 on their last three inspections. In addition, Tortugas Homemade Pizza is the only restaurant to receive this honor two years in a row.  All of these establishments should be very proud of their accomplishments.

Of course we are not implying that everything on the menu is good for your health.  Individuals must ultimately make good choices if they want to be healthy. An important choice to make is selecting a dining establishment that is smoke free.  There is evidence to show that as little as a thirty minute exposure to second hand smoke can have serious consequences such as heart attack or stroke.  Exposure is especially dangerous for small children and pregnant women.  If your favorite restaurant still allows smoking, ask them to consider going smoke free or try one of these award winning eating establishments instead.

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2006 Health Officer’s Award of Excellence!
